The New
Mississippi State Capitol building was completed in 1903. Erected on the
former site of the Old State penitentiary for a little less than $1.1 million the Beaux Arts style building was designed by Missouri architect T. Link.
The Capitol underwent restoration in 1979 and was completed in 1983 at a cost
of $19 million. The South entrance of the Capitol ( Print #022) is graced
by a monument erected in the memory of the mothers, sisters, wives and daughters
of the confederate soldiers ( Print # 023). The eagle which graces the dome is 8
feet high and 15 feet wide and made of solid copper plated with gold leaf. Trees
planted on the grounds include the state tree, the magnolia, Japanese magnolias
and crape myrtles (print #021). The Mississippi State flower is the magnolia
(print # 001 and # 0481).
