Living in a rapidly changing
world...new high rises, malls and subdivisions going up faster than what should
be considered reasonable...farmlands, old forests, rivers and streams
disappearing at an alarming rate all in the name of progress--should create a
passion within to support those agencies, organizations and programs that have
as their purpose for existence to promote and preserve as much as possible those
historical sites that tell our story as a people and nation.
One such agency is the Pat
Harrison Waterway District that oversees and operates nine water parks
throughout the State of Mississippi. In March of 2000 I had the
pleasure of visiting and photographing historic Dunn's Falls. Located in
east Mississippi approximately 15 miles south of Meridian, Mississippi. Travel
south on I-59 to Savoy exit #142 and follow the signs to the park's entrance.
The gate fee is $1.00 per person
and provides access to the park's lake (stocked with catfish on a pay-per-pound
basis), swimming and picnic area, playgrounds, grist mill and a wooden walkway
that offers a great view of the falls and leads you down to the waters of the
Chunky River on which the Great Chunky River Raft Race is conducted each
year. The 69 acre park also offers primitive camping, hiking and a unique
history.
